Three things Malaysia has and almost nowhere else does.
Beaches and temples turn up all over Southeast Asia. Wild orangutans, a mangrove forest cut into limestone towers, and a riverbank of fireflies flashing in time do not.
The orangutan sanctuaries
Wild orangutans live in two places on earth, and one of them is the island you are standing on. Sepilok outside Sandakan and Semenggoh outside Kuching both run rehabilitation programmes with fixed feeding times, morning and mid-afternoon. Nobody promises a sighting: when the forest fruits, the apes eat in the forest and the platform stays empty, which is the point of the whole exercise.

The Kilim geoforest
Kilim is a mangrove forest growing out of limestone that is older than most of the rock in Europe, and the boats run up channels barely wider than they are. Brahminy kites work the thermals over the cliffs, monitor lizards swim the shallows and the bat caves are cool inside. Go at high water: at low tide the boat cannot get into the good channels.

The fireflies that keep time
On the mangroves along the Selangor river, an hour and a half from the capital, thousands of fireflies flash in unison. Synchronous flashing happens in only a handful of places worldwide and this is the easiest of them to reach. Go on a moonless night, after rain if you can, and take the boat rather than the walkway.
